King Solomon Info

I wanted to provide some info on part of the story of King Solomon for those who aren't familiar with it.  This text is courtesy of Wikipedia (and is accurate to what we know):

"In one account, known as the Judgment of Solomon, two women came before Solomon to resolve a quarrel about which was the true mother of a baby. One mother had her baby die in the night after rolling over it in her sleep and crushing it; each claims the surviving child as her own. When Solomon suggests dividing the living child in two with a sword, the true mother is revealed to him because she is willing to give up her child to the lying woman, as heartbreaking a decision as it is. Solomon then declares the woman who shows compassion to be the true mother, and gives the baby back to her."

Update on Season 3 Progress

You can also read this blog directly on Kurt Sutter's page by clicking:

Original text by Kurt Sutter:

I know I'm thick into the season when I look at my blog and realize I haven't posted in weeks. Twitter is spoiling me. It's the lazy man's blog. So I'd figure I'd drop an update.

We just locked picture on 301 and everyone is very excited. Directed by "Shield" alum, Stephen Kay, the network had very few notes -- which is a good sign. The season picks up a few days after the season two finale and the episode is about Jax's emotional journey through the devastation of losing a child.

It's so interesting for me as a writer to explore these emotional avenues now being a father myself. I wrote a script years ago called Delivering Gen which was all about a man's inability to be a father. I remember some parental watch group read the script and pointed out to me and my agent, Nicole Clemens, who was also single at the time, that the baby in the movie is in life-threatening peril more than a dozen times. Our response was, "Really?" We were a little detached. But now that I'm a father, those scenes, those moments are much harder to write. And hopefully, deeper.

I watched Edge of Darkness over the weekend and while Mel was hunting down his daughter's killers, I was listening to Esme' coughing over the baby monitor. She has a cold. I kept pausing the movie, then running up to her room to make sure she was okay. It was a weird interactive experience. But now I know whenever I do write those father revenge scenes, they won't just be fantasy. I know in my gut, that I'd cut someone's fucking heart out if they ever threatened my kids. Truly, without pause. I'd kill with a clear conscience.

Wow. As usual, I've taken a left turn down Dark Drive. So about that update -- 302, directed by another "Shield" alum, Gwyneth Horder-Payton, came out great. I will say there's a scene near the end that rivals the tattoo removal sequence in season one. It makes me giggle. I haven't seen 303 yet. That too, directed by a "Shield" alum, Billy Gierhart. Looking forward to seeing Stephen King in that one. 304 is being shot by one of my favorite directors, and another "Shield" director, Guy Ferland (do you see a pattern?). 305 is being prepped, Gwyneth is helming that one as well. 306 is written. And I'm avoiding writing 307 at this very moment. It's due a week from today.

I tweeted about the new line of merchandise that will be coming out very soon. It's very hip. I think folks are really gonna dig it. We're in the process of putting together some kind of music tour with Bob Thiele and the Forest Rangers. The iPhone app is moving forward, as is the game. Oh, and we're gonna be auctioning off a custom SOA Harley for charity. More on that in the next couple weeks.

I think that's it. Back to Charming.

SOA Background For Season 3

You can also read this blog by clicking directly on the link for Kurt Sutter's Page:

Original text by Kurt Sutter:

By now, most folks know we are doing an Irish storyline this season. I won't spoil anything with details but I wanted to share some mythology with fans. This is information that has either already come out through character or will be alluded to this season. Again, it's nothing that will spoil your viewing but if you are reading my blog, or reaching out to me on Facebook or Twitter, it gives you some inside dope others won't have. And I'm sure I don't have to say this, but just for the folks in legal -- the following mythology is not based on real events or facts. It is all a machination of my disturbed little mind. Any likeness or similarities to real events or people is purely fucking coincidental.

Gemma, Jackson and Thomas Teller were all born with the family flaw. Varying degrees of congenital heart disease, CHD. Jax's condition was very minor and he eventually outgrew his issue. Although he needs to be aware of his genetic predisposition for heart disease, it's nothing that impacts his day-to-day life. Such is the case with Gemma as well. Thomas was not that lucky. Jax's younger brother was born in distress, his CHD was much more serious. (Abel was also born with CHD, but his condition, like Jax, is minor. Abel's birth distress was due to the Gastroschisis - intestines are outside of the body - an unfortunately common occurrence of children born of drug-addicted mothers).

Thomas' childhood was a series of tests, treatments and hospital stays. Not only did it have an emotional toll on John and Gemma, it created a huge financial burden as well. Up until that point, the Redwood Original charter had been involved in some illegal enterprises, but not guns. A member of the First Nine, McGee, was born and raised in Belfast. He knew that the IRA was looking for distribution to the states. Both McGee and Clay convinced John that assembling, customizing and selling guns could be a lucrative enterprise. John, desperate and already slightly broken, agreed. An Irish Catholic by birth, John Teller went to Belfast and made a deal with the Irish Republican Army. And so the gun business was born.

McGee stayed in his homeland and began the Belfast charter of the Sons of Anarchy. Sons of Anarchy Belfast (Sam Bell) became a mercenary arm of the IRA.

Just Some Updates

First I'd like to thank the people who have voted in our character review poll, if you haven't make sure you let me know the 3 people you would like me to add to my review list!
Second, I heard through a couple places that Paula Malcolmson will be joining SOA in an 8 episode arc in season 3. She's been in shows like Caprica and Deadwood, so stay tuned for more info on that.
In the character poll that Kurt has been announcing, Katey made it to the final 4, but ended up losing to someone from Burn Notice. Awesome job to everyone who voted, I voted on 3 different computers plus my phone every time!
I had a possible addition to the character list. I've been asked to include Otto! Don't know how I could have forgotten him but I will announce on the next episode that I will be adding him to the roster, so let me know if you would like a review on him! Don't forget, our season 1 recap podcast will be out on or before April 18th.

Original 9

I asked a question in my last podcast asking if John Teller and Piney Winston were the two that started the club together. Indeed they were, as I have found during my internet research.
"The club was formed by John Teller and Piermont "Piney" Winston, two Vietnam War veterans, in 1967 in Charming, California. Six of the original nine members were war veterans."
I swear that I had seen Kurt post something on Facebook this week about the original 9 but when I went back to find it, it wasn't there. I wanted to post that info here, because it listed the names of all 9. If I can find it again, I will post it, in the meantime, if you find it, please leave it as a comment to this post. Thanks everyone!

The Vote Is In!

Well our latest poll closed yesterday and the results are in. After asking my wonderful listeners if you'd like to see flashbacks are not, the result of the poll was a tie! We had a total of 18 votes, 9 of whom wanted to see flashbacks, and 9 of whom were fine with no flashbacks being shown.
Don't forget to vote in our newest poll, and this one directly affects you guys so get out there and vote!
And speaking of polls, vote Gemma! She's going up against Dexter and needs your vote. Here is the link to the site where you can cast your vote:

Pick 3 Characters To Have Me Analyze

Which 3 characters would you like me to review that I haven't yet (and that aren't listed on the cast & crew page on the SOA FX site)?
Polly Zobelle
Donna Winston
Cameron Hayes (from IRA)
Edmond Hayes (from IRA)
Marcus Alvarez (from the Mayans)
Laroy (from the 9ers)
Darby
LuAnn
***It has also been suggested that we do the IRA as whole... Let me know what you think!

Pick your top 3! After I get enough feedback, I will add the 3 that get the most votes to the list to do during the season 2 review. Then we will be caught up for season 3 and I will be able to analyze new characters as they appear!

These options will appear as a poll as of Thursday, April 1, 2010. Please make sure you vote for who you would like to see, the top 3 in the poll will be the winners!

Be a Part of Season 2 DVD!!!

This was directly from Kurt Sutter's blog. You can find the link to his blog on the right side of this page!!!

We are doing a ROUNDTABLE forum as one of the DVD extras for Season 2 of Sons of Anarchy. It'll be an on-camera free-for-all. Me and the cast from the show in the chapel, talking shit and answering questions.

Your questions.

I am going to select random questions from readers of this blog and friends and fans on Facebook and Twitter. I have set up an email account, questions@sutterink.com. Please only submit your question there, I cannot accept them on my blog, Facebook or Twitter. In your email, please include ONE QUESTION only, the name you would like to be identified by (because I will read it in the taping) and a return email address. The query can be about anything related to the show, cast or crew. You can submit as many emails as you want, but please only one question per email. The more obscure and uncomfortable the question, the better. I will notify folks by email and probably need you to sign a waiver to use the question and say your name on camera.

The deadline is soon -- Friday, April 9th. Pass it on.

Thanks.

Compiled By Kurt Sutter

Kurt posted this link on Twitter. I decided to re-post his post here, because I knew it would also be of interest to the majority of my listeners. IF you click on the link you can go to Kurt's actual blog, but the material listed below comes directly from his site :-)

http://sutterink.blogspot.com/2010/02/sons-of-anarchy-frequently-asked.html

10 Frequently Asked Questions About Sons of Anarchy

1. I have a great idea for the show, can I send it you?

No. I cannot accept any ideas, pitches, stories, scripts, notions or dreams from anyone. It's a legal issue. It protects me and you. If you send it, post it or email it -- it will be shredded, removed and deleted. Sorry.

2. I want to be an actor on your show, how do I audition?

If you are a SAG/AFTRA actor who has a permanent address in Los Angeles you can have your agent submit a picture and resume to our casting director, Wendy O'Brien. If the picture is not sent through a signatory agency chances are the envelope will never be opened.

3. How can I be an extra on your show?

If you a union or non-union actor who has a permanent address in Los Angeles you can contact Jim's B-List -- jimsblist.com .

4. I'm a singer/songwriter, I have a band, I have a perfect song for the show, how do I submit music?

As with the actors, a musical artist is best served by an agent or manager submitting their music through the proper channels. Bob Thiele, my composer and musical supervisor is trying to come up with a realistic system where submissions can actually get heard. Right now, we get hundreds and simply don't have the manpower or time to listen to them all.

5. When is the Season 2 DVD coming out?

Summer, 2010.

6. When is Season 3 beginning?

We never have an exact premier date until a few weeks before. We did very well with the timing of season 2, so my guess is that we will air some time in early September, 2010. But right now, that is just speculation.

7. Is Half-Sack really dead?

Fuck, yes.

8. Is that Katey singing "Ruby Tuesday"?

Yes, Katey sang "Son of a Preacher Man" in Season 1 and "Ruby Tuesday" in Season 2. I hope to have her sing a song every season.

9. Who is Edward Winterhalder and why is he saying that the character of Jax is based on one of his books?

I do not know Mr. Winterhalder, never read any of his fiction. From what I am told he is a former outlaw biker who turned rat and now makes his living as an author and outlaw biker "expert". I can only speculate that my choice of using real outlaws as technical advisers instead of a celebrity one somehow upset Mr. Winterhalder. I guess his claims are sour grapes and his parasitic attempt at getting a piece of SOA's success.

10. Are you really afraid of dolls?

Fuck, yes.

11. Why do you swear so much?

Fuck, yes.

12. I have something very special I want to give you, can I send it to you?

Fuck, no.

13. How come you only do 13 episodes? Why not 22 or 26 like network shows?

The model for FX and many other cable networks is 13. Yes, it's about money and scheduling, but it's also about quality. First of all, we cram more story into 13 episodes of SOA than most network dramas fit into 26. Second, this model allows us to make what I hope are 13 thoughtful, provocative 44 minute independent films, instead of 26 formulaic, predictable big-budget movies. Thirdly, my writers, cast and crew spend 7-9 back-breaking months making this show. It's guerrilla film-making and a labor of love. Any more than 13 would fucking kill us.

14. I live in a remote village in the Ukraine, when will "Sons of Anarchy" air there?

International sales and scheduling is not my job. I have no idea if, when, where the show will be airing outside of the United States. I know it's selling very well internationally, I just don't know any details. I suggest you contact your local cable company and ask them.

15. My friend watches the show over the internet for free, how does he do that?

Your friend steals. If you want to watch "Sons of Anarchy" over the net, I'd ask that you do it legally through the FX website, Hulu or iTunes. Pirating hurts the artist more than the conglomerate. I know it may not seem like a big deal, and you probably justify it by saying, "Oh, Fox can afford it", but it's a huge problem. The truth is every time you illegally download an episode of "Sons", you put actors, writers, and crew out of work. Think about that next time you watch a lime-wire episode.

16. I see "Sons of Anarchy" merchandise all over e-Bay and other internet sites. Is this real SOA stuff? Where can I buy official "Sons of Anarchy" stuff?

No. The stuff on e-Bay is all pirated merchandise. Some of them even blatently say "official SOA" shirts, hats, etc. -- they are not. It's someone selling illegal gear. It's criminal and there is very little we can do to stop it. Again, people justify it by saying, "Oh, Fox can afford it", but once again buying that shit doesn't help the show. The Fox/FX Store is the ONLY place to buy real SOA merchandise. We will be expanding the line extensively very soon.

17. Who is Sam Crow? What does Samcro stand for? Is there a difference between the two?

SAMCRO is an acronym for Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Originals. Sam Crow is the personification of that acronym. It's how the club refers to themselves. Kinda the way Bob Dole called himself Bob Dole. Over time, the locals began calling them Sam Crow as well. In fact most of the members live in a part of Charming called "Sam Crow's Corner".

18. What is Redwood Originals about? Why isn't the charter called Charming?

Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club was created by John Teller and Piney Winston in November of 1967 and the first charter was called "Redwood". Simply because they weren't settled in any one city. They cruised the Northern California coast from Eureka to Big Sur -- Redwood country. It wasn't until after Gemma became pregnant with her first son that they decided to settle in Charming -- the town where Gemma grew up. At that point, John Teller thought Charming was a little too cute for a charter name, so he called the charter the Redwood Originals. That's when the SAMCRO handle was born.
